Wall Street Journal Deletes Accidentally Super-Racist Tweet About Venus Williams

What was apparently intended as a lighter Wall Street Journal story about the dress code for tennis players at Wimbledon took a turn toward the, uh, racist in a tweet promoting the story on Thursday morning.

The tweet blared: “Something’s not white!”—an apparent pun on the “underwear police” who enforce the rule that undergarments can’t be visible during game play—paired with a photo of Venus Williams.

The pairing wasn’t intended to be “insensitive,” @WSJ wrote in a follow-up message after deleting the tweet about 40 minutes later. And, to be fair, choosing a photo of Williams, who just made the tournament’s finals on Thursday, did make sense with the story, as the elder Williams sister recently had to change out of a pink sports bra during a rain delay last week.
