Ever since FBI agents raided the New York office, hotel room, and home of Donald Trump’s fixer Michael Cohen nearly two weeks ago, multiple stories and TV news segments have focused on whether Cohen would flip.
Finally, some of those political commentators are beginning to address the elephant in the room: Why would Trump’s personal “lawyer” need to worry about flipping in the first place? Judging by Trump’s and Cohen’s behavior as of late, they are probably guilty as hell of something serious, and time certainly will tell.
Meanwhile, Trump’s attempts at keeping Cohen quiet—including a pardon for Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff “Scooter” Libby in a completely unrelated matter—are beginning to unravel spectacularly. You can always tell when Trump tries to fix something to cover up his behavior because he usually ends up making it worse (Stormy Daniels, the Devin Nunes memo, the James Comey memos, etc.).
Early Saturday morning, either Trump or White House social media director Dan Scavino, the “Man Behind the President’s Tweets,” fired back at The New York Times over a story published the previous day that was rather unflattering for Michael Cohen. Co–authored by Pulitzer Prize–winning reporters Maggie Haberman, Sharon LaFraniere, and Danny Hakim, the Times story revealed the allegedly abusive relationship Trump had with Cohen over the years. In that relationship, Trump apparently had bullied Cohen, repeatedly disrespected him, and ultimately isolated him in New York while the rest of the Trump clan moved on to Washington.
It puts Cohen’s recent statement that he would “take a bullet for the president” in an entirely new light, unrequited love and all. And no amount of tweeting is going to help when that mountain begins to crumble.
Whoever wrote the thread of tweets on Trump’s personal account had to do it twice, because they misspelled Haberman’s name the first time around. The typo was fixed after Haberman mocked them on Twitter.
The Trump Twitter thread stated:
The New York Times and a third rate reporter named Maggie Habberman, known as a Crooked H flunkie who I don’t speak to and have nothing to do with, are going out of their way to destroy Michael Cohen and his relationship with me in the hope that he will “flip.” They use....non-existent “sources” and a drunk/drugged up loser who hates Michael, a fine person with a wonderful family. Michael is a businessman for his own account/lawyer who I have always liked & respected. Most people will flip if the Government lets them out of trouble, even if....it means lying or making up stories. Sorry, I don’t see Michael doing that despite the horrible Witch Hunt and the dishonest media!
Haberman, the “third rate reporter,” was part of a New York Times team that just won a Pulitzer for reporting on Trump’s connections to Russia. She immediately spell–checked the president Saturday morning and noted that the story must have “touched a nerve.”
“One B, sir (or Dan?). Here’s the story that seems to have touched a nerve,” Haberman tweeted.
Meanwhile, on Friday, a U.S. district judge in California, who is presiding over the latest in the Stormy Daniels lawsuit, said Cohen is probably going to be indicted.
“It is substantially likely there is going to be criminal action to follow,” U.S. District Judge S. James Otero said, referring to Cohen, the Los Angeles Times reported.
