Was quite relieved when Salt Lake City was not in the top 20. The potential Amazon HQ2 had been on the news every night until that point, with all the usual stuffed shirts explaining to us how we shouldn’t be too focused on how our increased taxes would be funneled directly to Jeff Bozo’s pocket. There was a lot of… Read more
Hey, you never know. The Red States have already demonstrated a willingness to fuck over the coastal blue states. It would be kind of great if their jealousy at largely being ignored by Amazon were to fuel the passage of that kind of law. Read more

Some Minnesota teachers have recently tied their stalled negotiations and decrease in school funding to local tax breaks for corporations.
And rightly so.

I think the unions need to get in on the messaging, starting by taking on all of the shit that most workers put up with and are seen as normal, and saying “you know, that’s kinda what a union is for.” I’ve had friends fired because their manager didn’t like them. I have even more friends who are doing jobs outside of… Read more

Our problem is that people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of their leaders and have gone to war, and millions have been killed because of this obedience...Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of… Read more
THANK YOU. Many years ago, I lived in Johannesburg, South Africa, which had at the time (and continues to maintain) a fearsome reputation for violent crime which put it in a league with places like Kabul or Bogota. I rented a cottage in Parktown, a leafy near-north suburb, which was on the estate of an Afrkaaner… Read more

True story: About ten years ago, I found myself in conversation with a woman who was married to an obscenely rich banker (he was also particularly influential, as head of his sector’s national association). She was clearly very distressed as she described to me the shame she felt as she had pulled up to meet some… Read more

So many parallels to the fall of Rome. Expanding economic inequality, power wielded by those who pay for it, obsequious flattery, an emperor receiving information exclusively through his selected courtiers *cough Fox News cough*, senators immune from taxation, incompetent sons of leaders... This is admirable, though I think about how most creative destruction of obscene wealth and privilege makes life harder for others. Dig up the greens at a country-club golf course, and some poor schmucks will be forced to fix it, though maybe they shouldn’t be working there. Set up a circle of trebuchets to fire… Read more

This is a great cause. Of all the terrible things anyone ever suffers through, this has to be at or near the top of the list. I don’t think I’d wish it on anyone; not even Donnie Oligarch-o (my contribution to the canon) and his cronies. Prison? The guillotine? Absolutely. But not rape - that’s a bridge too far. Read more

Thanks for sharing this link again this year Hamilton. Even if people are in jail for hateful or violent crimes, they don’t ever deserve to be raped. No one does. I hope these cards give the recipients some comfort, however ever small it may be, during what I am sure is a very lonely holiday season.
