17 unforgettable photos of black people protesting the police killing of Alton Sterling

Earlier this week, after Baton Rouge, Louisiana police shot and killed Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man, outside the Triple S Food Mart—where Sterling regularly sold music CDs—people took to the streets of Baton Rouge to hold vigils, remember Sterling's life, and protest police violence.

Photographer Julie Dermansky was in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, at a vigil for Sterling the day after his killing, and the images she captured are powerful portraits of what is now a tragically common scene—people gathered at the scene of a police killing of a black person, crying out for justice.
