If President Donald Trump is like your Facebook-loving boomer father who shares low-quality Minions memes and earnest copypastas calling on their friends to support the troops, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is your witty, curated millennial cousin who knows how to battle the trolls while maintaining her air of authenticity.
And now her party is trying to take a page from her playbook: On Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez and Connecticut Rep. Jim Himes will be hosting the session with the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, USA Today reported Wednesday. The session will focus on “the most effective ways to engage constituents on Twitter and the importance of digital storytelling,” per the paper. So, basically, a Journalism 101 class on how to be good and professional at tweeting.
“The older generation of members and senators is pretty clueless on the social media platforms,” Himes told USA Today. “It’s pretty clear that a lot of members have 25-year-olds in their offices [running their social media.]”
The rest of the Dems could use some help online, but Twitter should be the least of their worries—after all, AOC isn’t a hit online just because of her Instant Pot recipes, her left-wing politics are popular too. Meanwhile, her colleagues are off firing off meaningless, resistance-baiting tweets, emo blogging like no one is reading, or pulling shit like this.
Himes told USA Today he advises lawmakers to feed into the public’s “hunger for calling it like it is.” For now, it’s unclear how this will go over among the House’s more curmudgeonly members. (Ocasio-Cortez’s office did not immediately respond to Splinter’s request for comment. We’ll update this post if we hear back.) But hopefully the duo will emphasize one lessons above all others: knowing when to log off.
