My partner feels strongly about passing on his last name and thinks his heritage/history/family tie is important and wonders how people will recognize us as a family unit if we all have different last names. Read more

The best compromise I can see is that one parent passes down the last name and the other gets final say on the first name. (They could flip a coin on it if they have to.) Then if they have a second kid, the order is reversed. It’s a little awkward, but there isn’t a not-awkward solution here. Read more

As someone who has both his mother’s last name and a good relationship with his father, I can assure the writer that if she wins this argument everything will be just fine. Read more

It is true that it’s better to just raise a child that goes against patriarchy. But I find many women use that sort of phrasing as a short hand for “Hey, I like my name too, and find it to equally important. Soooo...” Read more

People outside the US think folks in the military somehow cracked the code on how to function in a multiracial society. I was actually both a UU (went to Sunday School every week) and in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, so I’m not sure that’s true. But maybe the Boy Scouts have shifted even more right than I thought. I know the Girl Scouts are a million times better than the Boy Scouts when it comes to inclusivity, etc. Read more

I took an on online religion quiz and was paired with the Unitarian Universalist Church. Read more

Seriously, is it ok to buy Aunt Jemima syrup? The butter flavored syrup is so good on my mini waffles. I am very white, but I grew up either using Aunt Jemima syrup or Karo Dark Corn Syrup (what was my mom thinking?!) on my mini waffles and pancakes. Read more

I work at the admitting desk in a hospital urgent care. When these type of women come in with that look of fear, and pain it takes everything i have to keep my calm and get them back in the rooms as best i can. When i work the late shift i get at least 1 a week from either rape of someone’s boyfriend beating the snot Read more
