More of this, please. Let’s revisit our formative YA fiction one by one.
Next, how this book alerted me to the existence of gender fluidity:

Now that I’m reminded of it, that made an impression on me, too. So much so that I immediately thought of it when I read the ending of The Grapes of Wrath a couple years later. Read more

Oh my god. My Teacher Flunked the Planet specifically is why I’m a socialist (well, that and my super progressive parents who encouraged and cultivated it). Bruce Coville in general is just phenomenal and I have plenty of goof memories of reading his books... but I remember very clearly, very vividly, the sequence in Read more

Loved this series as a kid and have been trying to get my daughter to read it. Unfortunately, she has no interest. Read more

This book cover is burned into my brain even though the contents escape me. That refuge camp passage is chilling regardless of your age however. Read more

I hadn’t thought about these books in 20 years. Thank you for guiding me down an awesome nostalgia trip. Read more

Bruce Coville’s Book of Ghosts had one of the sweetest supernatural stories that I’ve ever read, as an adult or a child. It was called “Not From Detroit” and it was about an old couple who were near death and how the man fought death to... well, you’ll just have to read it. It’s very touching. Read more

I remember that rad cover from when i was a kid. I’m sure i read this, possibly the follow ups, but that was like 25 years ago. I dont really remember the contents of the book(s) Read more

God I got chills when this popped up. I read this series many times. I’m still struck by them moving out the eyeball alien in buckets. Read more

I read a BUNCH of Coville’s books way back when (if for no other reason than him being a hometown hero). I remember enjoying them, but that’s about all that’s survived the past 20-ish years. Read more

LOL...i too was in elementary school but for me it was Star Trek that gave me my commie leanings. Read more

This was one of my favorite series as a kid because even though it was written at a childs reading level it was still some heavy conceptual shit to even a nerd like me. I wonder how long before DeVos starts banning books like these in schools Read more

I loved this series, and was so saddened during the end of the last one. I felt very bad for the bully whose brain was “fried” but learned that the effects of enhanced intelligence were only temporary. Pretty much another flowers for Algernon, and its definitely stick with me the most after all these years. Read more

Holy shit, yes. These books had a huge impact on my in my formative years, and are probably a big part of why I ended up leaning so far left despite coming from a very staunchly conservative family. Read more

I loved these when I was young, but remember next to nothing about the stories. Read more

Thanks for this article. I read around the same time as you and fell off as I got older but now I’m sad it’s over. Its pretty Sega like to end it just before issue 300 and fail to get a short term deal together to allow Archie to wrap up the story and give it a proper send off. Read more

I’m just going to leave this here. Yeah, that’s Spawn.

Yeah, if I had to do an issue of Sonic, it would either be this idea or Tails drawing and retelling a recent adventure.
