What should we do with all these bad, ugly statues of Confederate soldiers and officers, scattered around the country? Easy: We should take them down.

Some might object to that proposal. Defenders of Confederate monuments say the statues are simply about heritage; they say removing them would be erasing history; they say the monuments are public art; they say that removal could lead to a slippery slope, where all monuments to less-than-perfect men end up in the crosshairs next.

All of those arguments are, to put it bluntly, horseshit. America’s Confederate monuments are mostly junk, and the best thing we could do to honor our history is tear them down.
