The UK's Anti-Trump Protests Were Very Good

Most of Trump’s visit took part away from London to avoid the protests. (On Friday, Trump’s second day in the UK, he met with Prime Minister Theresa May at her country residence, Chequers, as well as with Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle.) But that didn’t stop people from showing up.

The “Trump baby” balloon soared high in Parliament Square as crowds began to gather to protest against Trump’s policies around issues like immigration, LGBTQ rights, racism and climate change. The balloon later made its way to Trafalgar Square, perched atop of a lion statue.

Trafalgar Square reaches capacity

At least 100,000 people showed up to Trafalgar Square, which, according to organizers, reached capacity by 11:30 a.m., organizers said. Even half of that would have been the biggest weekday protest in London since protests against the Iraq war in 2003, CBS News reported.

A large sign reading “BUILD BRIDGES, NOT WALLS” was draped over a wall on the steps of London’s National Gallery of Art, which sits across from the square.

Demonstrators gathered in Glasgow as well on Friday evening, just ahead of Trump’s arrival in Scotland. People held signs saying things like “Give the weans Irn Bru not iron cages” and “Bolt ya rocket and make Scotland great again.”

Trump will be spending his weekend at his Turnberry golf resort in Ayreshire. More protesters are expected to gather outside the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh on Saturday.

Of course, a small group of Trump supporters showed up as well. A group was seen chanting “We love Trump!” in front of protesters as police officers stood between the two-opposing groups.
