Founded by Time Inc. in 1998 and shut down in 2006, Teen People magazine now mostly exists only on Tumblr and eBay. But we got our hands on every single issue from the year 2000.
Each month this year, we’ll take a look back at the groundbreaking glossy.
This is the third installment; we've already flipped through the January issue and the February issue.
Today we're checking out March 2000, with the boys from 'N Sync.
The cover: All the guys are wearing yellow sweaters, except for Lance. Poor Lance. But it's cool how the silver-gray "underage DRINKING" lettering matches Chris Kirkpatrick's windbreaker.
One of the first ads inside this issue is for the fragrance CK One. Where is Danny now? I sent a message to this email address yesterday. Haven't heard back yet.
One of the second ads, for DKNY Jeans, features Brandy, Brandy's windswept hair, Brandy's exposed underwear waistband, and Brandy's belly-button piercing.
Page 28: The fact that Oz didn't return to Buffy haunted a lot of us. Not just you, Court. Not just you.
Page 56: Forget J. Lo. That picture of Lady Bunny giving side-eye as Lenny Kravitz giggles is amazing.
Page 81: Flared jeans, karma beads and "Mambo No. 5" were the hot trends in Wichita for March 2000. All of the clothes seem so slouchy!
Admit it: These big-headed chicks made you want to buy platform shoes.
Pages 88-94: Just five dudes in sweatpants and a dog, playing tug of war. Tearing' up your heart.
You know who was photographed looking super sweet and dreamy? Lance Bass.
Joey Fatone looks like the cousin you only see a few times a year but even when it's Christmas morning his pupils are dilated.
Justin's jump shot is weird, and his quote is eyeroll-worthy.
Chris has the dog.
Team JC.
This 'N Sync story is partly about their successful trajectory and partly about their lawsuit against impresario/svengali/alleged Ponzi-schemer Lou Pearlman, who was also sued by the Backstreet Boys and is currently serving 25 years in prison with a projected release of March 24, 2029. Probably not in a padded room.
Moving on!
Pages 112-116: pre-reality show, pre-billion-dollar fashion brand, pre-John Mayer, Jessica Simpson talks about God, the Baptist church, and her virginity. She says of the first time she met Nick Lachey: "I went home and old my mom, 'I'm going to spend the rest of my life with this guy.'" Can't blame a girl for trying.
To be honest, I skipped right over this Enrique Iglesias story…
…Because I couldn't stop staring at this ad starring Jonathan Jackson, aka Lucky on General Hospital, aka Mud in Camp Nowhere, aka Jesse Tuck in Tuck Everlasting, aka Avery on Nashville. Heartthrob alert!
Last, but not least: Hair of the year 2000. Not great. Those blonde flippy wings at the bottom are especially troubling right now.
Next month we'll look at the April 2000 issue, starring the boys of Blink 182!
