On Monday, President Donald Trump presided over a ceremony to honor the Navajo Code Talkers, who helped ensure American victory in World War II. But, Trump being Trump, the president couldn’t help but fuck it up with racism.
After admitting that he had to ask his Chief of Staff, General John Kelly, just how important the code talkers actually were during the war, Trump quipped, “You were here long before any of us were here. Although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas.”
Ha ha ha! Nothing lightens the mood quite like re-upping Trump’s derogatory slur for Massachussets Senator Elizabeth Warren.“But you know what?” Trump continued, breathily. “I like you. Because you are special.”
He said all this in front of a portrait of Andrew Jackson, which is perfect.
Watch the whole sorry spectacle here:
Update, 3:35 PM— During her daily briefing, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended the President’s statement, saying “what most people find offensive is Senator Warren lying about her heritage.” She also called Warren’s description of the comment as a “racial slur” a “ridiculous response.”
