Video of a teenage girl in India hitting a boy she said had been harassing her and her friends on the streets is going viral on Indian social media networks.
The girl, from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, hits a boy with her sandal and demands an apology–while inside a police station.
The girl allegedly confronted the boy outside the police station and then dragged him inside before she started hitting him.
"He used to harass us every day. When it went beyond limits and the abuses grew worse, we decided to act," the girl said, according to the Hindustan Times.
Some responses to the Hindustan Times posting the video were totally behind the girl, saying that police and politicians can't be trusted to take action:
While others said the police should have intervened:
In December last year, two sisters were filmed fighting men harassing them on a bus in another Indian state. The incidents come as India grapples with how to deal with sexual assault, especially after a 23-year-old woman was violently raped by several men on a bus in Delhi. Following protests in some of India's major cities, harsher penalties were introduced for rapists–but women across the country continue to face sexual assault and harassment far too frequently.
